American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State is a prestigious weeklong educational program that teaches high school girls about state and local government, leadership and responsible citizenship.  Girls attending ALA Palmetto Girls State experience governmental procedures by simulating political campaigns, elections, and the political process. They also learn about the principles of citizenship and public service from guest speakers, expert panels and staff members.  The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Girls State program has been preparing female high school students for civic leadership since 1937.

The American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State is an immersive program that simulates governmental operations to include legislative processes, election procedures and responsibilities that are tied to public office.  The program excels in developing teamwork, patriotism, advocacy, and civic responsibilities.  These are traits that will lead to greater successes while fostering advantageous friendships & leadership skills.     

The delegates, who are rising seniors in high school are selected by local American Legion Posts to attend the program.  In most cases, expenses associated with attending this program are paid by a sponsoring American Legion Post, a local business or another community-based organizations.  The history of the American Legion Palmetto Girls State continues to be written. Each year, the number of delegates to the program grows. Many exciting changes are occurring within Palmetto Girls State.  Our staff is always on the lookout for ways to better the program.  We’re thrilled about our future and proud of our past.  We hope you are too!

The American Legion sponsors a similar program for young men called Boys State.
